When your caring role comes to an end, it can bring a mix of emotions. Whatever you are feeling, you are not alone and support is available.
When the person you care for dies, it can be really tough to know how to move forward – not only have you lost the person you loved but you have lost your way of life. It is important that you look after yourself during this time and continue to access support services.
When your caring role ends, it can feel overwhelming to know what to do next. You may experience a mix of emotions – grief, relief, loneliness, or a loss of purpose – all of which are completely normal. Take things at your own pace and be kind to yourself.
Support is still available to you as a former carer. Talking to someone you trust, seeking bereavement support, or connecting with others who understand can help you process what you're feeling. Over time, you may find it helps to gently reconnect with activities, groups or routines, or to explore something new when you feel ready.
Looking after your physical and emotional wellbeing is important, and small steps – such as getting out of the house, eating well, or building a new routine – can make a real difference. Your experience as a carer has given you valuable skills and strengths, and when the time is right, there are opportunities to use these in ways that feel meaningful to you.
You are not alone, and there is life beyond caring – it just takes time to find your way forward.
